Uveitis Treatment
Once a daily dose equivalent to 7.5mg (0.75ml) prednisolone is reached, dose reduction should be slower to allow the HPA axis to recover. Diets are available that are designed specifically for diabetic cats, and these may increase the chance that your cat’s diabetes goes into ‘remission’ (see below for more information on this). Diabetic steroids to buy online diets for cats are designed to have a very low carbohydrate level, as this is thought to reduce the upward drive for blood glucose after eating, reducing any peaks in glucose levels and therefore reducing overall blood sugar. Ideally, all cats with diabetes would receive one of these diets, however, this is not practical in all cases.
- Although incurable, it’s generally manageable with the right care and medication, and cats with the condition normally lead happy and active lives.
- These will tell us if there is overt evidence of jaundice and whether the cat is suffering from dehydration.
- My dog, 16 yrs old, has been on this tablet for a week, have now dropped dose to half tablet.
- If your cat’s symptoms are seasonal (worse in the summer and better during the winter) then it is most likely at least partly due to pollen.
- However the amount that may be administered through your skin is likely to be very small and have no effect.
The ability of corticosteroids to cross placenta varies between individual drugs, however, 88% of prednisolone is inactivated as it crosses the placenta. Concomitant use of aspirin and Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) with corticosteroids increases the risk of gastro-intestinal bleeding and ulceration. The efficacy of coumarin anticoagulants and warfarin may be enhanced by concurrent corticosteroid therapy and close monitoring of the INR or prothrombin time is required to avoid spontaneous bleeding.

There is a fatty acid called palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) which exerts a variety of biological functions relating to chronic pain and inflammation. In acute and chronic inflammation levels of PEA have been shown to be reduced along with an imbalance in the ECS. It is also believed to exert a cannabinoid-like effect and therefore has also been taken as a dietary supplement to help with pain management in people.
- Whilst single high doses are generally well tolerated, they may induce severe side-effects in long term use.
- Stabilisation of a diabetic cat is possible on most complete diets, with the only difference being the likelihood of diabetic remission.
- This makes stabilisation a little more difficult, but if your cat is one of these, it can help to have a list of 4 or 5 diets that you can rotate through.
- I presume your vet has good reason to do this, but it would be worth checking to see if there is something else which could be done.
It can also be combined with opioids and other adjuncts to enhance
their effects. It is very important that you follow the instructions you are given about the tapering process, as taking away the steroids too quickly can be life-threatening. The severity of disease can be variable but unfortunately many cats are very sick by the time they are presented to the veterinary clinic. In the majority of cases the patient requires admission to our emergency out of hour vets with 24-hour care provided even whilst diagnostics are being performed.
Cats – Liver, Pancreas and Kidney/Urinary Problems
As stress can aggravate the disease, you should ensure your cat remains as relaxed as possible at all times. Asthma in cats is an immunity-related condition and attacks can often be brought on by an allergy or stress. Suspected triggers include pollen, grass, mould, dust mites, tobacco smoke, cat litter, household cleaning products and even some foods.
Sometimes we need to use other drugs to compliment the use of steroids, allowing us to reduce the steroid dose whilst still controlling the disease. Adverse reactions (frequency and seriousness)Anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, such as prednisolone, are known to exert a wide range of side effects. Whilst single high doses are generally well tolerated, they may induce severe side-effects in long term use.
Why do cats take prednisolone?
Mild feline acne cases can also be treated using antiseborrheic shampoo. Antibacterial or antifungal shampoos should be recommended by the vet. Although it’s tempting to reach for the human version of anti-acne products, don’t do so unless directed by the vet.
Considering that diabetes is more common in older cats, this length of time can often represent something approaching a normal lifespan. 25mg of prednisolone would be a huge dose for an infection and it would indeed make your dog very thirsty and produce loads of urine. I think that either you misunderstand the problem your dog has, or there is a mistake somewhere and your dog should not be on prednisolone 25mg. If your dog has an “auto-immune” disease, then 25mg might be appropriate.
A large percentage of cases of so -called “Interdigital Cysts” are caused by one or other of these conditions. There are a multitude of causes, which can make a correct diagnosis and treatment of the condition difficult. This blog will concentrate on some of the more common cases that I have seen, but here is a list the general categories and diseases to be considered as differential diagnoses for pododermatitis.
Snoring or loud breathing when resting is not necessarily a sign of asthma. Knowledge Summaries are a resource to help reinforce or inform decision making. They do not override the responsibility or judgement of the practitioner to do what is best for the animal in their care. Please note – human medications such as ibuprofen and paracetamol are toxic to cats.
Prednisolone is four times as active as hydrocortisone on a weight for weight basis. Other effects that may occur during withdrawal or change of corticosteroid therapy include benign intracranial hypertension with headache and vomiting and papilloedema caused by cerebral oedema. Too rapid a reduction of corticosteroid dosage following prolonged treatment can lead to acute adrenal insufficiency, hypotension and death (see section 4.4). Occasionally additional medications are required, such as cyclosporine and azathioprine which are given orally, either to aid suppression of the immune system, or to allow us to reduce the steroid dose without fear of relapse.
Sometimes it is necessary to use other drugs to compliment the use of steroids, allowing the steroid dose to be reduced whilst still controlling the disease. Larger dogs tend to require a slightly lower dose of steroids than and cats usually tolerate the effects of steroids better than dogs. Other side effects which your vet will be on the lookout for include the increased risk of infection (due to suppression of the immune system), stomach ulcers, blood clots and diabetes (particularly in cats). In some dogs and cats, determining the appropriate dosage of steroids can be challenging, and it can be difficult to ensure that the right amount of medication is given to control the disease without having significant side effects.
